I will suggest you give him the break he wants. Doing otherwise will mean that you are smothering him, and I know you don't want him to see you as that.

He hasn't broken up with you, he only wants time apart for his studies. So, I think you should respect that, since he still needs to attain his education ambition even while in a relationship with you.

You should give him space.
Trying to force him into a relationship he doesn't have the time for will not benefit you, it will only end with him resenting you. So carry on with your life, you really aren't that invested yet. Either you guys will pick things back up in a couple months or you'll find someone new.
